San Diego mayor reaffirms support for license-plate readers

Staff Writer · 2026-10-14 · San Diego

In an October 13, 2026 statement, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria supported continued use of automated license-plate readers and cited the city's surveillance-review and privacy-oversight requirements. He said the technology had assisted nearly 900 criminal investigations and helped recover more than $8.7 million in stolen property; these figures are attributed to his office.

Gloria's statement describes public review, independent privacy oversight, auditing, reporting and controls on information access under the city's TRUST Ordinance. He said his administration would continue supporting police investigations while protecting civil liberties and holding technology providers accountable.

The announcement reaffirms the mayor's position. It does not announce a new deployment schedule, change to resident requirements or new application process. It also does not provide the underlying investigation data or a new audit report. The investigation and property-recovery figures should therefore be read as the mayor's reported results, not as a separate finding by this publication.
