Arkansas's first BEAD payment covers groundwork, not immediate internet hookups

Staff Writer · 2026-10-15

Arkansas has paid Brightspeed $2.6 million after verifying the first milestone for 13 broadband projects spanning 25 counties. The planned networks would connect more than 13,700 homes and businesses; this payment recognizes planning and preconstruction work, not completed service to those locations.

The State Broadband Office posted the announcement October 14, 2026; the statement itself is dated October 13. Brightspeed submitted project plans, budgets, environmental-review schedules and network designs to satisfy the initial milestone.

Further payments depend on verified progress under the grant agreements. The release describes nearly $66 million in planned investment across these projects, including more than $39 million from Brightspeed. Those totals are not the amount of this first state payment.

Residents can check current service through the address tool linked on the office's homepage. The announcement provides no household application, individual activation dates or retail prices. A project award should not be read as confirmation that a particular home can order service today.
