Juneau pedestrians lose Calhoun bridge connection; replacement undecided

Staff Writer · 2026-10-15 · Juneau

Juneau has closed the pedestrian bridge and stairway crossing Calhoun Avenue after a state bridge inspection. Barriers went up October 9, 2026; the city has not decided whether to demolish or replace the structure.

People traveling between Dixon Street and the surrounding downtown area need a different walking route. The city asks pedestrians to respect the signs and barricades rather than continue using the crossing.

The October 10 municipal notice says Alaska Department of Transportation bridge engineers inspected the structure, built in 1977, and determined it was beyond its useful life. The closure concerns the pedestrian bridge and stairs; the notice does not announce a closure of Calhoun Avenue to vehicles.

No reopening date, replacement timetable or designated accessible detour appears in the announcement. Questions can go to Chief CIP Engineer John Bohan at john.bohan@juneau.gov. The engineering department also carries the closure notice.
