Alabama park grants support seven communities, without setting opening dates

Staff Writer · 2026-10-14

Alabama awarded more than $6.1 million through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund for recreation projects in Athens, Boaz, Cleveland, Gadsden, Priceville, Troy and Trussville, with local governments contributing matching funds.

The October 2 announcement covers construction, renovations and a land purchase. Athens plans pickleball courts and trail improvements; Boaz will renovate its sportsplex tower and add an accessible restroom; Cleveland will replace a ball field; and Gadsden plans a splash pad and related facilities.

Priceville will buy 36.9 acres for a future park. Troy plans athletic courts, a walking trail, a playground and other Knox Street Park improvements. Trussville will replace playground equipment and add a picnic shelter and an exercise area serving older residents.

An award announcement is not a resident application window or a promise that a facility is already open. The release gives no construction schedule, admission rules or opening dates. Residents can follow their municipality's project updates; local officials remain responsible for delivering the projects and their announced matching contributions.
