Alabama opens three livestock shelters before Tropical Storm Isaias

Staff Writer · 2026-10-08

Alabama agriculture officials opened free, first-come livestock sheltering in Troy, Dothan and Autaugaville ahead of the storm expected Friday evening; owners must call ahead and bring care and identification supplies.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries says the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association at 4100 U.S. Highway 231 South in Troy, Houston County Farm Center at 1701 East Cottonwood Road in Dothan and R.H. Kirkpatrick Agricultural Pavilion at 2224 Alabama Highway 14 West in Autaugaville are available for livestock evacuated ahead of the storm.

The facilities do not charge for sheltering, but space is first-come, first-served. Owners should call before leaving to confirm capacity and any facility-specific requirements. The notice applies to livestock, not dogs, cats or other companion animals, and says livestock moved because of the storm is exempt from a certificate of veterinary inspection.

Owners remain responsible for their animals and should bring current animal and vaccination records, proof of ownership, temporary identification supplies, species-appropriate handling equipment, feed, water, buckets and sanitation supplies. The notice does not establish a general evacuation order; residents should separately follow current state, local emergency-management and weather instructions.
