Indianapolis 500 Folk Hero ‘Jigger’ Sirois Dies at 91

Leon Duray “Jigger” Sirois, who became part of Indianapolis 500 folklore by nearly earning an improbable pole for the 1969 race, died Sept. Sirois, a native of Shelby, Indiana, made no starts in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” despite attempting to qualify every year from 1969-75. But his close call at earning the top starting spot in unique circumstances in May 1969 became a legendary story in the history of the world’s greatest race.
