NAPLES, Fla.—Today, Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a statue of Christopher Columbus in Naples as part of Florida’s ongoing celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The statue honors the Italian explorer and navigator whose historic voyages helped usher in a new era of exploration and shaped the early history of the Americas and Florida.

“I was proud to unveil a statue of Christopher Columbus, who heralded a new era of exploration that transformed both sides of the Atlantic,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Columbus’ Columbus’ discoveries inspired and informed the voyages that led to Florida’s settlement, and his courage during those tumultuous journeys laid the foundation for what would one day become the United States of America. In the Free State of Florida, Christopher Columbus is a hero. End of story."

“I am very proud of taking part in this celebration of Christopher Columbus, whose figure encompasses the best of Italian genius, courage, and genuine passion for discovering,” said Michele Mistò, Consul General of Italy in Miami. “Today marks an important recognition of the Italian-American Heritage Month in the vibrant State of Florida where thousands of Italian nationals every day contribute to economy, culture, scientific research, and entrepreneurship. Today we celebrate the many common values that unite our Nations and our communities”

“The chance to explore history is one of the reasons people choose this state,” said Bryan Griffin, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA. “Unveiling a statue of Christopher Columbus in Naples gives residents and visitors a durable reminder of the exploration that opened the Atlantic and made Florida’s story possible. We welcome everyone to visit this statue and the many other historic sites and monuments across the state.”

In 1492, Columbus embarked on his first transatlantic voyage with the sponsorship of Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Sailing aboard the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María, Columbus reached the Caribbean, establishing a lasting connection between Europe and the Americas. His subsequent voyages between 1493 and 1502 ushered in a new era of exploration and helped inspire generations of explorers, including Juan Ponce de León, who named Florida; Hernando de Soto; and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who founded St. Augustine in 1565.

Columbus remains an important figure in Italian-American heritage and a prominent part of the history of Western exploration. His legacy has been commemorated throughout the United States, including through the naming of the nation’s capital district and the establishment of Columbus Day as a national observance. The statue in Naples recognizes his place in the story of exploration and Florida’s early development while providing future generations with an opportunity to learn about the historical figures who helped shape the Western Hemisphere.

Naples provides a fitting setting for the Columbus statue, sharing its name with the Italian city that reflects the explorer’s heritage. The monument will serve as a lasting landmark for Southwest Florida, connecting the region’s history to the broader story of exploration and the development of America.

The unveiling continues Governor DeSantis’ efforts to preserve America’s history and honor consequential figures through Florida’s America250 initiative. In February 2025, the Governor announced a plan to install statues of the Founding Fathers, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, James Monroe, and Alexander Hamilton. The initiative has since expanded to recognize other influential Americans, including Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, President Calvin Coolidge, President Ronald Reagan, Andrew Jackson, and Lady Columbia.
