For several weeks, Karen Schumacher had no hot water in her Vancouver mobile home. Several times a day, she filled and heated a kettle just to have the hot water she needed.
Then she learned that she was eligible for the Clark County Weatherization Program.
After the Clark County Public Utility District referred Schumacher to the program, a weatherization crew visited her home and conducted a comprehensive energy audit. They quickly discovered that the broken hot water system wasn’t the only issue. The home needed additional improvements to make it safer, healthier and more comfortable.
With funding from several sources, including the Bonneville Power Administration, American Rescue Plan Act, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Weatherization Plus Health program, the project provided $23,292 in improvements to Schumacher’s home.
The work went far beyond restoring hot water. Crews installed a ductless heat pump and thermostat, insulated water pipes, floors and ductwork, and sealed air leaks around the home. They also improved indoor air quality by adding whole-house ventilation and properly venting the dryer and kitchen fan.
Other improvements addressed health and safety concerns. Crews replaced the electrical panel and two windows, repaired a leaking pipe, installed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, added grab bars to help prevent falls, and cleaned and tuned the furnace.
Together, the improvements gave Schumacher a home that is safer, more energy efficient and more comfortable.
“I never dreamed of the help I received from this wonderful program!” said Schumacher. “I feel like I have a brand new home. I don’t have to worry anymore… I will never forget Jerry and his crew.”
For Schumacher, getting her hot water back was only the beginning. The weatherization project helped transform her home into a healthier, safer and more comfortable place to live for years to come.
