What this means

Secretary Scott Bessent met Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda in Asheville, North Carolina, on August 30, 2026, alongside the G20 finance meetings, according to Treasury. Bessent called for coordinated U.S.-Japan work on economic priorities and careful monetary-policy communication to steady inflation expectations and limit excessive currency swings. Treasury said he backed Japan’s market and monetary measures and described the yen as substantially undervalued, linking its weakness to Japanese inflation. That exchange-rate assessment is attributed to Bessent, not an independent valuation.
