FTC warns insurance shoppers about lookalike search ads

A September 28 alert urges Medicare and Marketplace shoppers to verify where an advertisement actually leads.

Why an official-looking ad deserves a second check

The FTC's September 28, 2026 warning describes advertisers using government-style logos and similar web addresses to misdirect insurance shoppers. Following those ads can lead to products that are not health insurance or expose personal information to misuse. The agency says these scams become more common around enrollment season.

Start from a verified address

For Medicare, enter Medicare.gov directly or call 800-633-4227. For Marketplace coverage, use HealthCare.gov or 800-318-2596. Paid search placement does not establish that a seller is an official enrollment service. Check the address before sharing identifying information.

Get help and report a concern

Medicare shoppers can seek assistance through their State Health Insurance Assistance Program or Senior Medicare Patrol. HealthCare.gov offers a local-help directory. Report suspected fraud through ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your state attorney general; Medicare-related scams can also be reported to Medicare. This alert does not change enrollment dates or determine eligibility.
