Concordia turns one night into two championships
Concordia University, Nebraska closed the Great Plains Athletic Conference soccer schedule with two emphatic results against Midland. The 22nd-ranked men's team won 3-1, completed the first 10-0 conference season in program history and extended its winning streak to 11 matches. Concordia finished the regular season 12-4 and will enter the GPAC tournament as the No. 1 seed.
The women's team followed with an 8-0 victory that earned a share of the GPAC regular-season championship. Guadalupe Sanchez and Kianna Perez scored twice apiece, and Molli Kalsbeck, Abby Haynes, Kyana Rios and Melissa Howard also scored. Concordia finished league play 9-1-1 and improved to 10-3-3 overall.
State & Nation assessment: the men's perfect conference run is the sharper résumé statement, but the women's response carried its own weight. With a championship available, Concordia produced six scorers and allowed Midland no shots on goal. Both teams now move from proving consistency to handling elimination games.
Johns Hopkins strengthens two postseason positions
Johns Hopkins women's soccer defeated Dickinson 2-0 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and kept first place in the Centennial Conference. Katie Derby scored in the 15th minute, Gwen Rauvola added the second goal in the 59th and Ella Kruntchev made two saves for the shutout. The Blue Jays improved to 12-1-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play, giving them 24 league points, one more than Swarthmore entering the final regular-season date.
The Johns Hopkins field hockey team also moved to 8-1 in Centennial play with a 6-0 win over Gettysburg. Sarah Chilton scored three goals and assisted on another, while the Blue Jays held a 15-9 shot advantage and a 10-4 edge in penalty corners. Johns Hopkins is 13-4 overall.
State & Nation assessment: both victories reduced the room for late-season ambiguity. Women's soccer controls the most direct route to the tournament's top seed, while field hockey paired a decisive margin with a second straight conference win. The next task is to carry that control through the regular-season finales.
Rice changes the American volleyball picture
Rice recovered from an opening-set loss to defeat American Conference leader Tulane 3-1 in Houston. The Owls won 16-25, 25-19, 25-13, 26-24 and improved to 14-9 overall and 8-3 in conference play. Sydnee Peterson recorded 20 kills, Zora Bello supplied a career-high 33 assists and Jordan Hummel made 24 digs.
State & Nation assessment: the fourth set mattered beyond extending the match. Rice erased two Tulane set points, finished the comeback and gained a result that can reshape the late conference race. The Owls now have a short turnaround before hosting South Florida on Friday night.
Games to watch through Saturday morning
Rice hosts South Florida in women's volleyball Friday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. The Owls have little recovery time after Wednesday's four-set win, making rotation management and first-set efficiency immediate tests.
No. 5 Quinnipiac opens its ECAC Hockey home schedule against Yale on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Eastern in Hamden, Connecticut. Quinnipiac's official schedule lists the Bobcats at 7-1-1 after road wins over Union and RPI. The Yale game begins a conference homestand that continues Saturday against Brown; only Friday's game falls inside this report's 48-hour look-ahead.
