Friday's results, checked through Saturday morning

Rutgers supplied two different versions of a hard-earned conference win on October 16: a men's soccer shutout against previously unbeaten Indiana and a field-hockey victory over Michigan in overtime. In Division II women's volleyball, East Stroudsburg left West Chester with a three-set win. The common thread is not a prediction of a championship; it is the value of taking a verified league result into the next assignment.

This selected national morning report covers games dated Friday, October 16, 2026, checked through 7 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, October 17. It is not a complete national scoreboard. The upcoming-game window ends at 7 a.m. Eastern on Monday, October 19; scheduled games below are not completed results.

Men's soccer: Rutgers makes Indiana chase

Rutgers beat Indiana 1-0 at Yurcak Field. Francesco Di Ponzio scored at 72:24, and the box score lists Rutgers with 14 shots to Indiana's nine and eight shots on goal to one. Rutgers finished the night 6-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the Big Ten; Indiana was 11-1-2 and 4-1-1.

That distribution of chances gives the result more substance than the one-goal margin alone suggests. Rutgers did not need a high save total to keep Indiana out. For Indiana, the loss interrupts an unbeaten start without erasing the broader record; one road defeat and a season's work should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

Field hockey: a late overtime decision

Rutgers also defeated Michigan 3-2 in overtime. The official box credits Anna Cogdell with the tying goal at 43:42 and the winner at 74:55. Talia Schenck scored Rutgers' other goal. Rutgers moved to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten, while Michigan was 6-7 and 1-5.

Rutgers led the shot count 20-8, but still needed overtime. That combination matters: generating more attempts creates opportunities, not a guaranteed result. The next test comes quickly, with Michigan State scheduled to visit Rutgers at noon Eastern on Sunday, October 18.

Division II volleyball: East Stroudsburg separates late

East Stroudsburg swept West Chester 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 in PSAC women's volleyball. Jadyn Orava recorded 13 kills, and East Stroudsburg hit .393 to West Chester's .080. The Warriors were 13-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play afterward; West Chester was 9-12 and 1-6.

The attacking-efficiency gap is a clearer explanation than simply calling this a sweep. West Chester has a short turnaround: its official schedule lists a 4 p.m. Eastern visit to Kutztown on Saturday, October 17. Improving the quality of its attacking opportunities will be an immediate point to watch, not a claim that the next result is settled.

Coverage limits

The schools' original recaps and game-specific box scores underpin the results and statistics above. This edition does not claim to settle conference qualification, tiebreakers or postseason selection. Other divisions, NAIA and junior-college results remain outside this article's verified game packet; their absence is a coverage gap, not evidence that no games were played. Analysis is State & Nation's assessment, not an official ranking or projection.
