Georgia owns the top line after Texas falls and the Top 25 fractures
Georgia supplied the strongest answer in a turbulent week: win the heavyweight game and take the top line. Texas, Oregon, LSU, Florida and Pittsburgh all lost, while UCLA made the clearest case for a major climb. Coverage: October 4 at 7 a.m. through October 11 at 7 a.m. Eastern.
Games covered: Oct 4, 2026–Oct 11, 2026. Baseline: Associated Press Top 25 college football poll, Oct 4, 2026. Ranking-change assessments and projections are by State & Nation.
Georgia earned the first ballot position
The argument for No. 1 should begin with what happened on the field, not with the number beside a helmet seven days ago. Georgia went to Alabama and won 20-17. Texas lost 27-24 to Oklahoma. That is a direct, clean exchange of evidence, and it gives the Bulldogs the best claim to the first line of the next ballot.
Notre Dame was emphatic against Stanford, but a 58-7 home rout of an overmatched opponent does not carry the same weight as Georgia's road win. Miami did not play, Ohio State handled Maryland, and the unbeaten teams below them kept building. State & Nation's view is that Georgia should move to No. 1, with Notre Dame, Miami and Ohio State sorting out the next three spots and Texas dropping into the next cluster.
The middle of the poll separated itself
UCLA produced the most valuable result outside the top tier, a 17-15 win at No. 13 Oregon. The Bruins should make the largest upward move because the victory added both quality and road value. Utah, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, USC, Iowa and Houston also supplied credible reasons to move forward.
The losses were not equal. Alabama's three-point defeat against Georgia should cost less than Florida's 38-19 loss to South Carolina or Pittsburgh's home loss to North Carolina. LSU's overtime loss at Kentucky is damaging because it is a second defeat, while Oregon's home loss to UCLA changes the Ducks' entire profile. Context should keep voters from turning every win into a promotion and every loss into the same punishment.
Poll baseline and editorial method
This column uses the Associated Press poll issued October 4, 2026, as its fixed baseline and includes every ranked team in that edition. Results are limited to completed games from Sunday, October 4 at 7 a.m. Eastern through Sunday, October 11 at 7 a.m. Eastern. Miami, Texas Tech, Mississippi State and SMU had open dates in that window.
The rise, fall and hold assessments below are State & Nation editorial projections and opinion, not official poll results. The next AP poll had not been issued by the cutoff, so these judgments concern the ballot expected later Sunday.
The Top 25, team by team
No. 1 · Texas
October 10: lost to Oklahoma 27-24 in Dallas.
The Longhorns lost a rivalry game they entered as the poll leader. The narrow margin matters, but the neutral-site defeat removes the central argument for keeping them first.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: fall several places, likely into the No. 5-No. 7 range.
No. 2 · Georgia
October 10: won at Alabama 20-17.
No contender added a stronger result. Winning a one-score game in Tuscaloosa gives Georgia the week's best combination of opponent quality, venue and consequence.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise to No. 1.
No. 3 · Notre Dame
October 10: defeated Stanford 58-7 at home.
The Irish did exactly what an elite team should do against a lesser opponent and remained unbeaten. The blowout protects their place but does not outweigh Georgia's road win.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold near No. 2 or No. 3.
No. 4 · Miami
Open date; no game between the October 4 and October 11 cutoffs.
Miami's 5-0 record remains intact, but an idle week added no new evidence. Texas' loss may create upward room without strengthening the Hurricanes' résumé.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold in the No. 3-No. 4 range.
No. 5 · Ohio State
October 10: defeated Maryland 45-16 at home.
Ohio State handled an unranked opponent decisively and kept pressure on the teams above it. The Buckeyes' work was convincing, though Georgia's win was more valuable.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise one or two places, with No. 3-No. 5 the likely band.
No. 6 · Alabama
October 10: lost to Georgia 20-17 at home.
A three-point loss to the team with the strongest claim to No. 1 is not a collapse, but losing at home still requires a demotion. Alabama should stay well ahead of teams with more damaging defeats.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: fall into the No. 8-No. 11 range.
No. 7 · Indiana
October 10: won at Nebraska 20-17.
Indiana survived a difficult road game and remained unbeaten. The close score limits the ceiling of the move, but the Hoosiers did what several ranked peers could not: finish.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold or rise slightly around No. 6-No. 7.
No. 8 · BYU
October 9: defeated Iowa State 24-10 at home.
BYU moved to 5-0 with a controlled conference win. The Cougars have earned upward consideration, though the teams just ahead also posted credible results.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise one or two places.
No. 9 · Ole Miss
October 10: won at Vanderbilt 52-17.
The Rebels turned a road conference game into a rout. That margin, combined with losses above and around them, should move Ole Miss closer to the first eight.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 7-No. 8 range.
No. 10 · LSU
October 10: lost at Kentucky 35-34 in overtime.
The overtime margin softens the blow, but LSU now carries a second loss. The résumé no longer supports a top-10 position against the unbeaten teams pressing from below.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: fall into the No. 15-No. 19 range.
No. 11 · Texas Tech
Open date; no game between the October 4 and October 11 cutoffs.
Texas Tech stayed 5-0 while nearby teams lost, but the Red Raiders did not add a result. A small rise would reflect movement around them rather than new proof.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold near No. 10-No. 11.
No. 12 · Utah
October 10: defeated Kansas 41-24 at home.
Utah remained unbeaten with another multi-score win. The Utes have a reasonable top-10 case after the teams immediately above and below them split sharply.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 9-No. 11 range.
No. 13 · Oregon
October 10: lost to UCLA 17-15 at home.
A home loss to the No. 21 team is one of the week's clearest negative signals. Oregon should fall behind the one-loss teams that won and behind UCLA on head-to-head evidence.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: fall into the No. 18-No. 22 range.
No. 14 · Missouri
October 10: defeated Texas A&M 27-6 at home.
Missouri followed its statement win over Florida with another decisive conference victory. The Tigers' defense and margin justify advancement without requiring a leap past stronger unbeaten résumés.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 11-No. 13 range.
No. 15 · Tennessee
October 10: won at Arkansas 24-17.
A road conference win adds real value, even without a dominant margin. Tennessee should benefit from losses by Oregon and LSU while remaining behind Missouri's more decisive performance.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise one or two places.
No. 16 · Florida
October 10: lost to South Carolina 38-19 at home.
Florida followed a heavy loss at Missouri with another decisive defeat, this time at home. The two-week pattern overwhelms the benefit of its earlier ranking.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: fall out of the Top 25.
No. 17 · Mississippi State
Open date; no game between the October 4 and October 11 cutoffs.
The Bulldogs added nothing during their bye, but several ranked teams behind them lost. Their position should be broadly stable rather than rewarded aggressively.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold in the No. 16-No. 18 range.
No. 18 · Oklahoma State
October 10: defeated UCF 42-28 at home.
Oklahoma State answered with a two-touchdown conference win and enough offense to separate from the teams that stumbled. The Cowboys should gain modestly.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 15-No. 17 range.
No. 19 · USC
October 10: defeated Penn State 31-23 at home.
USC added a solid win with an eight-point margin. It is not a result that demands a dramatic jump, but it should move the Trojans ahead of several losers around them.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 16-No. 18 range.
No. 20 · Iowa
October 9: won at Washington 41-24.
A 17-point road win is stronger than a routine hold. Iowa should move up, though the Hawkeyes' full-season résumé still has to be weighed against the teams already in the mid-teens.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 17-No. 19 range.
No. 21 · UCLA
October 10: won at Oregon 17-15.
UCLA owns the week's best upset and a direct road win over No. 13. The Bruins should be the biggest climber, with head-to-head evidence placing them ahead of Oregon.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 13-No. 16 range.
No. 22 · Houston
October 10: won at Kansas State 35-16.
Houston posted a convincing road conference win and avoided the volatility that hit the bottom third of the poll. The Cougars merit a measured climb.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: rise into the No. 19-No. 21 range.
No. 23 · Boise State
October 10: won at Fresno State 38-31.
Boise State secured a rivalry road win, but the seven-point margin keeps the case for a large jump modest. Staying on the ballot should not be in doubt.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold or rise one place.
No. 24 · SMU
Open date; no game between the October 4 and October 11 cutoffs.
SMU did not play while teams just outside the poll gained another chance to build their cases. The Mustangs remain vulnerable at the cut line despite no new negative result.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: hold at the edge or slip out, depending on the receiving-votes field.
No. 25 · Pittsburgh
October 10: lost to North Carolina 21-17 at home.
A home loss from the final ranked position leaves little cushion. Pittsburgh's earlier work remains part of the résumé, but this result should open the spot to a team that won.
State & Nation ranking outlook: State & Nation outlook: fall out of the Top 25.
