The online service connects entrepreneurs with free planning resources and guidance on registration, taxes, permits and expansion.

Pennsylvania’s online Business Hub has helped more than one million users, the state Department of Community and Economic Development reported Oct. 22. The milestone concerns a free service that directs entrepreneurs and business owners to planning tools and the agencies responsible for business requirements.

Business owners can use the Pennsylvania Business One-Stop Shop to find help with registration, taxes, hiring and operating permits. Its startup resources also cover local registration, zoning and professional licensing, while its planning tools address business plans, names and organizational structure.

The service is intended for people considering a business, companies already operating in Pennsylvania and out-of-state businesses seeking to expand there. For expansion, the department lists resources on online commerce, local business advisers, government contracting, small diverse businesses and funding information.

DCED Secretary Rick Siger announced the usage milestone in Harrisburg. The One-Stop Shop was established in October 2018, and the online Business Hub followed about a year later, according to the department.

DCED says the service continues to add and improve tools, including a Business Checklist, grant-related capabilities and changes to the Hub platform. The announcement does not set a launch date for a specific new tool or open a named funding round.

What it means

The practical value for an entrepreneur is a starting point for finding the relevant registration, tax or licensing office and planning resources. The reported million-user total measures use of the Hub; the release does not establish that a million separate businesses were created or financed through it. Its announcement of continuing improvements gives no dated launch for a specific tool, new funding-round deadline, permit approval or grant award.
