Nucor plans $60 million Alabama utility-structure expansion

The steelmaker says its Trinity project would add 60 jobs and expand production for electric-grid equipment.

Nucor plans to invest $60 million in its Towers & Structures operation in Trinity, Alabama, expanding a plant that makes steel poles and related utility infrastructure. Gov. Kay Ivey’s office said October 20 that the project is expected to add 60 jobs in the Decatur area.

The planned work would increase utility-pole production and add laydown space and a dedicated area for inspecting galvanized products. Nucor’s Towers & Structures business operates beside the company’s Decatur sheet mill; the state announcement says Nucor employs more than 2,700 people across its Alabama operations.

The governor’s office said the project is eligible for Alabama Jobs Act credits and workforce-training assistance from Alabama Industrial Development Training. The release did not disclose the value of that support, a construction schedule or a timetable for filling the projected jobs.

What it means

The announcement pairs added manufacturing capacity with a specific employment target, but both remain forward-looking. Until Nucor completes the expansion and hires for the new positions, the $60 million investment and 60-job figure are company and state projections rather than completed results.

The added capacity is intended for steel poles and other structures used by electric utilities. The announcement links the investment to utility demand but does not identify a customer, a specific grid project, a completion date or any effect on consumer electric rates.
