Washington programs restore heat in Soap Lake home

Three state-funded programs combined furnace, electrical, plumbing and safety repairs for a Soap Lake mobile-home resident living on Social Security.

Three Washington state-funded programs paid for repairs that restored heat and reliable utilities at a Soap Lake mobile home, the state Department of Commerce said October 20. The resident, identified by the agency as Angela B., had been living without heat or dependable electricity during the winter and could not afford extensive repairs on her Social Security income.

Opportunities Industrialization Center of Washington coordinated the work. Commerce said the State Home Energy Assistance Program provided an electric forced-air furnace, a thermostat and a new electrical panel.

The Home Repair Grant Program covered structural and safety work, including 19 electrical outlets, plumbing repairs, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, two exterior doors, 10 windows and decks with handrails. The agency said one bathroom had lacked running water for years and deteriorated surfaces had created additional hazards.

Weatherization funding paid for insulation around water pipes and in floors and ceilings, along with a replacement refrigerator, smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors, ventilation improvements and new flooring. Commerce described the work as a coordinated response by separate programs rather than a single repair award.

The release presents one household's completed project. It does not state the total cost, identify the date work finished or say that every listed program is currently accepting applications in Soap Lake.

What it means

For this resident, combining three programs addressed immediate utility failures and longer-term safety and energy needs that one source of aid might not have covered alone. The result was a completed home-repair project, not a new statewide benefit announcement.

The account shows the kinds of work the participating programs funded in this case, but it does not establish general eligibility, available funding or application timing for other households. Those details remain unresolved in the release.
