Nazareth designation opens path to downtown grants

Main Street status lets the borough’s economic development commission seek up to $225,000; the announcement does not award that money.

Downtown Nazareth received Pennsylvania’s Main Street designation October 23, opening a funding opportunity for the Northampton County borough’s revitalization plans.

The Department of Community and Economic Development said the Nazareth Economic Development Commission can apply for up to $225,000 in supporting grants. The designation is not confirmation that the commission has received that amount.

The commission plans its first streetscape program for the central business district, with pedestrian lighting, public art, street furniture, waste management and crosswalk improvements among its intended elements.

DCED Secretary Rick Siger announced the designation during a visit to downtown businesses. The release does not provide a construction timetable or a grant application deadline for Nazareth.

What it means

Nazareth’s new status gives its economic development commission a route to seek state support for downtown work. For residents and businesses, the announced improvements remain plans; the release does not establish when work will start or how much funding will ultimately be approved.
