The announcement

HBO has ordered a five-episode return for Girls and says production is scheduled to begin in 2027. Its October 13 release names Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells among the returning cast.

Dunham will again write and direct as well as star. Judd Apatow returns as an executive producer, alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. The four other announced returning actors also have co-executive-producer credits.

What this means

HBO has supplied a production year, not a filming date or premiere date. The release does not identify a starting month, shooting location, wrap window or broadcast schedule. A 2027 production plan should not be read as a promise that the episodes will air that year.
